A new study finds that seniors who take Solgar zinc supplements are at significantly less risk of infections, in part because of Solgar zinc’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, both of which improve immune function.

“Dietary zinc intake declines with advancing age,” said Ananda S. Prasad, MD, PhD, MACN, and lead author of the study, which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. “Deficiency in zinc makes elderly people more susceptible to infection, in part because cell-mediated immunity depends on the mineral.”

In previous papers, Dr. Prasad describes how zinc affects multiple aspects of the immune system: it is involved in production of chemical messengers that affect immune function (cytokines), the development of antibody-producing white blood cells that mature in the bone marrow (B lymphocytes), and the function of natural killer cells (a type of white blood cell that attacks and kills tumor cells and protect against a wide variety of infectious organisms). These and other immune cells are negatively affected by zinc deficiency.

Prasad’s latest study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in which 50 seniors (ages 55 to 87) received either Solgar zinc gluconate supplements (providing 45 mg of elemental zinc per day) or a placebo for 12 months. In addition to tracking the incidence of infections, such as colds and flu, they also tracked the blood levels of immune cells, oxidative stress markers, and plasma concentrations of zinc.

Compared with a group of younger adults, when the study started the older subjects had significantly lower blood levels of zinc, higher generation of inflammatory cells, and higher oxidative stress markers in their blood. The incidence of infections, generation of inflammatory cells, and oxidative stress markers were significantly lower in the zinc group than in the placebo group.

“We hope that our results will stimulate larger zinc trials in the elderly,” Prasad said. “Deficiency of zinc is very widespread in all ages throughout the world and may even be as prevalent as iron deficiency anemia, affecting nearly one billion people.”

It should be noted that zinc inhibits copper absorption, and can cause anemia and bone-marrow suppression if taken long-term in large amounts without copper. People taking zinc more than a few weeks, with the exception of those with Wilson’s disease, should also take a copper supplement providing 2 or 3 mg per day.

While Solgar probiotics are usually used to encourage the growth of healthy bacteria in the large intestine, new research suggests that they can also benefit the stomach, helping people with gastritis and peptic ulcer disease respond better to treatment.

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that can colonize the stomach, leading to gastritis and peptic ulcer disease in some people. Most people with these conditions are infected with H. pylori.

A combination of two antibiotics and an acid blocker—known as triple therapy—is used to treat gastritis and peptic ulcer disease associated with H. pylori infection. This approach, however, leads to side effects, such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, and has only a modest success rate (about 75%), so the search for other treatments continues.

A new study, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, compared the effect of triple therapy by itself to triple therapy plus a Solgar probiotic and a compound from cow’s milk that has antibacterial, immune-sytem-boosting properties (bovine lactoferrin).

After H. pylori infection was confirmed for each of the 206 people in the study, they were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups: one week of triple therapy or triple therapy plus 200 mg of bovine lactoferrin and a probiotic twice a day. The probiotic provided a wide array of beneficial bacteria, mostly from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families.

Eight weeks after the end of treatment, H. pylori tests were negative in 92% of those who added the lactoferrin and Solgar probiotic, but in only 76% of those treated with triple therapy alone. In addition to being more effective, the regimen that included lactoferrin and Solgar probiotic also caused fewer side effects: only 9.5% of the people who used the lactoferrin and probiotic, compared with 40.6% of those who received triple therapy alone, experienced side effects including nausea, diarrhea, a metallic taste in the mouth, headache, and abdominal pain.

The success rate with triple therapy seen in this study is similar to that seen in other recent reports. Its effectiveness has been declining, possibly due to increasing resistance to the antibiotics currently used to eradicate H. pylori. Improving the response rate and reducing side effects through adding nonantibiotic therapies could help prevent antibiotic resistance.

“The results obtained suggest that the synergistic effect of bovine lactoferrin and probiotics could improve the eradication rate and reduce the side effects of antibiotics both during and after treatment,” the researchers concluded. “These results need to be confirmed, but triple therapy plus bovine lactoferrin and probiotics could represent a valid alternative regimen to the standard H. pylori eradication protocol.”

Fish oil supplements and regular exercise both reduce body fat and improve cardiovascular health. Could combining the two work better than either one alone?

“Only two studies have previously investigated these two interventions in combination,” said Professor Peter R.C. Howe, director of the Nutritional Physiology Research Center, School of Health Sciences, University of South Australia, and supervising author of the new study. But because of the study design it wasn’t clear whether this combined intervention effectively reduced cardiovascular risk and improved body composition in overweight participants.

In the new study, overweight volunteers with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high triglycerides were randomly assigned to one of the following interventions:

fish oil,

fish oil and exercise,

• sunflower oil (placebo), or

• sunflower oil and exercise.

They took 6 grams of tuna fish oil per day (providing 1.9 grams of omega-3 fatty acids) or 6 grams of sunflower oil per day. The exercise groups walked three days per week for 45 minutes at 75% of their maximal heart rate.

People who supplemented with fish oil experienced lowered triglycerides, increased HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and improved blood vessel function. Exercise alone improved some measures of artery health. Both fish oil and exercise independently reduced body fat. Though regular, moderate-intensity exercise, either alone or combined with fish oil supplementation, had no effect on triglycerides or cholesterol, researchers still came away from the study concluding that fish oil plus exercise was a winning combination.

In addition to obesity itself being a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, obese people often have other risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes in a condition known as the metabolic syndrome. So it’s helpful when interventions for obesity target multiple cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors.

Several studies have found that taking omega-3 fatty acids from fish or fish oil results in fewer deaths from coronary artery disease. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil may lessen several cardiovascular risk factors, including high blood pressure and triglycerides. In addition, some, but not all, clinical studies show that supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids can reduce body fat.

Most studies find that physical activity alone leads to relatively minor weight loss. While the lost pounds may be few, it is nevertheless clear that physical activity prevents weight gain. But it can take as much as 60 to 90 minutes per day of moderate-intensity physical exercise to maintain body weight in the absence of other interventions, such as diet modification or supplementation. Exercise, with and without weight loss, independently improves several risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including lowering blood pressure, favorably altering cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and improving the function of blood vessels.

“Increasing intake of omega-3 fatty acids could be a useful adjunct to exercise programs,” concludes Professor Howe, “because both therapies improve body composition and decrease cardiovascular disease risk.”

Many women start thinking about calcium and vitamin D after menopause, but new evidence suggests that paying attention to these nutrients before menopause could protect against breast cancer.

The new study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, was drawn from the large, long-term Women’s Health Study. The analysis included information about diet and cancer diagnoses over a ten-year period from 10,578 premenopausal women and 20,909 postmenopausal women.

Some of the richest sources of dietary calcium are green leafy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, and broccoli, as well as sea vegetables such as kelp and dulse. Figs and some nuts and seeds also provide high amounts of calcium. Vitamin D has few natural sources (primarily egg yolk and fish oil) but the body is able to make plenty when it has adequate sun exposure.

Most of the calcium and vitamin D for the women in this study, however, came from fortified dairy foods and supplements. Calcium-fortified orange juice and vitamin D–fortified cereals also contributed to the total intake. This pattern reflects the eating habits of most Americans and people from other Western-influenced cultures.

Calcium and vitamin D intakes were both linked to lower breast cancer risk in premenopausal women, but not postmenopausal women. Compared with premenopausal women with the lowest intake of calcium, those with the highest intake had a 39% lower risk of developing breast cancer; for vitamin D, having the highest intake reduced the risk by 35%. Aggressive breast tumors in particular were less likely to develop in women with high calcium and vitamin D intakes.

“Higher intakes of total calcium and vitamin D were moderately associated with a lower risk of breast cancer among premenopausal women, and the lower risk was more pronounced in more aggressive breast tumors,” the study authors reported, pointing out that this was not the case for postmenopausal women.

“We already knew that women should be trying to get lots of calcium and vitamin D well before menopause to ensure the health of their bones. With these findings, there is even more incentive,” commented Dr. Julianne Forbes, a naturopathic doctor practicing in Maine. “It’s encouraging to see that science is giving us more tools for protecting women against breast cancer. I hope that future research will tell us more about how specific sources of calcium compare in their protective effect.”
